The Demolition: Photographs By Sheryl Neal
On view until February 21, 2025
Sheryl Neal was born in Seneca Falls, NY. Upon graduation from high school, she left NY and earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts at Bethel College in Minnesota. After teaching in Michigan, Texas and Delmar, NY she settled here to teach visual arts at Canajoharie Central School in the early 70's. Never intending to stay, she somehow found herself brought into and charmed by the community.
Ms. Neal worked in stained glass and glass mosaics until recently when she decided to raise interest in what changes happen in the village after so many have moved away and remain a bit curious. Her first major project became the Capital Campaign for the West Hill School. Between raising money and taking photos, she was busy meeting the goal. The 5S bridge over the Canajoharie Creek became the next photo journal which lasted a few months. When the Beech Nut demolition was announced, the story in photos seemed the obvious next choice. Because that complex was a gigantic sight and impact on the village, and a place where so many families had worked it seemed the logical next sequence to record how Canajoharie was changing almost daily. These photos on display represent a sliver of the images taken from beginning to the final days. |
